The twin-barreled guns are again taking their rightful place, especially among upland shooters- the same as bamboo is being "re-discovered" by a younger crew. Even Weatherby has gotten into the act, as well as Ruger. The aforementioned Ithaca/SKB's kicked things off, soon to be followed by the resurrection of the old Fox shotguns, Parkers, and others.

Now, as we did in the 1970's and 1980's, we're coming full circle. Then, as all good things seem to do, the love affair with SxS tapered off, as the barrels resting side-by-side gave way to the trend toward the new semi-automatics- a shotgunning phase akin to fly rods made of bamboo and glass being temporarily displaced by the faster graphite rods. Names like Parker, Fox, LC Smith, Winchester, Ithaca and others immediately come to mind, all offering a wealth of models and variations to fit almost every budget. Just as it was with the eras of the fine American bamboo rods, we once were privy to no shortage of exceptional double guns as well- and I'm talking side-by-sides here. is this a good place to begin? Does it need special loads? Are 30" barrels too long for Upland (my Ithaca's 28")? If it doesn't come with a carrying suitcase (I hunted last fall with a friend from California that had a Merkel sxs that broke down into a small suitcase, like putting a good rod into a tube), are used ones out there? Thanks.Mark

Q: I'd love to upgrade to a side by side for Upland. It has more drop than my Ithaca but fits me very nicely. Condition is tight and clean, no cracks or chips, choke is unknown but likely full/full or something like that. then on third trip folded a hun at about 30 yards long sweeping left at about head height, I can still see it in my minds eye, and was dumbfounded when the bird fell out of the sky.Īt local fishing and hunting shop today for tying materials and got distracted by a 1927 LC Smith Field Grade 16 gauge, Hunter Arms Co, Armour Steel, 30" barrels, double triggers. I would walk, flush a covey, miss, walk another half mile thinking about hitting, flush, miss, repeat. first few trips couldn't hit a thing, coveys of huns flushed at 10 yards at my head height, and I missed like trying to shoot ghosts.

was a fine season, 40 trips to Pheasant, Partridge, and Sharptail Grouse country 10 minutes to 1 hour from home. Thanks for your help last year advising me on hunting upland with my step-dad's 1958 Ithaca Featherlight 16 gauge he gave me.
